SEDC Focus Areas

“Our Goal is to Improve Air Quality and Public Health by Reducing Emissions from Existing Diesel Engine”

The SEDC is structure around three Focus Area’s as of October 28,2010

  • Freight is focused on the components of freight movement, combining ports, rail, interstate Green Corridors and trucking. Public Fleets is focused on fleets providing public services including school buses, city and government fleets, as well as private service fleets such as delivery trucks. Non-road is focused on the variety of non-road fleets, including emergency response diesel generators, quarry and mining equipment, construction fleets, airport ground support equipment and military fleets. For all three focus areas, the underlying principals remain:
    • Multi-pollutant approach
    • Nonattainment and near nonattainment areas
    • Multi-Agency
    • Incorporate additional benefits of clean diesel efforts such as climate change, reduction in vehicles miles traveled/sprawl, environmental justice and air toxics.
Expanding interstate Green Corridors (GC) continues as top priority for the Freight focus area, in addition to incorporating new aspects of the SmartWay program. The GC subcommittee’s focus is on expansion and refining marketing materials to support specific interests, such as for small independent companies versus larger shippers and carriers. Ports and distribution centers are another unique subcommittee, with rail and multi-modal yards included with ports. A freight planning subcommittee for transportation planning and air quality is exploring a regional approach by engaging state DOTs and local metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs).

  • Public Fleets is focused on increased partnerships working with city, county and municipal government fleets, including university shuttles and other service fleets. Tailored “Benefits and Best Practices” presentations are being developed for local governments to expand outreach to larger groups like the league of municipalities. Social media opportunities to expand outreach are another area of concentration.

  • Non-Road is focused on developing a tiered education campaign from federal/state policy makers to MPOs and land-use planners. A marketing campaign linking industry partners and distributors with end users is being developed. Airport ground support and construction best practices are being developed in coordination with state AGCs and interested air carriers. Mining is a new opportunity being explored.
